What is evidence? What does someone mean when they say there's 'no evidence' for any particular claim? Is a claim, itself, evidence all on it's own? Can something be rightly called evidence one day, and not the next? Is evidence automatically strengthened on the basis of multiple claimants?
Carol doesn't sleep well the night of the party. She arises early, unrested, at around 5, makes a pot of coffee, pours herself a cup, then stands staring out the kitchen window at the yellow house across the street. At some point, a station wagon rolls by...the newspaper guy. He tosses one into her driveway, and another into the driveway across the street. Carol puts on her robe and slippers, walks down to the end of her driveway and fetches her paper. She looks at the yellow house. No lights appear to be on inside, although the windows are fully draped, so she can't be sure. It's still dark, and chilly besides, so she only stands there a minute or so before going back inside.
She peeks out several times during the morning. Each time, the other newspaper is still there, lying in the driveway. At about 9, she hears a groan from the bedroom. Bob is feeling the effects of the previous night's drinking. She takes him a cup of coffee, chiding him good-heartedly in the process. Then she goes back into the kitchen to make him some toast. She glances out the window. The paper is gone.
QUESTIONS:
Why does Carol take Bob a cup of coffee?
Have you ever stolen a paper out of somebody's driveway?
I get it now! I am Mr. Garcia... when I moved into my house, it took about three months. We would come in about 9pm and unload stuff. We'd be nowhere around during the day. Are you stalking me?
ReplyDeleteLOL! Don't give the secret away!
ReplyDeletehey there i missed this one first time around
ReplyDeletemy best guess is she took him coffee because he was hungover and i've stolen a helluva lot more than a newspaper out of a driveway
a claim is not evidence itself but a ^credible witness^ is evidence for a claim
yes it strengthens in numbers
but i was actually wondering how you answer the opening questions
and hey i should have that fante thing up tonite or tomorrow morning
GRandall:
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input, and for the fante thing as well. At this point, I'm leaving the opening questions up for grabs, though part of the reason I've asked them the way I do is to point out the semantical angles of the conversation.
I've have a new installment coming up, as soon as I feel a little better and can think straight. Good to see you.
